You mean the jaw-dropping Meteora monasteries in central Greece—stone towers with monasteries perched on top like something out of a fantasy film. Located Near the town of Kalabaka, in Thessaly. It’s about a 4–4.5 hour trip from Athens. Monks began building here in the 14th century to seek isolation and protection. Originally rope-access only. Supplies and people were hauled up in nets and baskets. The 6 monasteries you can visit today. Dress modestly (shoulders covered long skirts for women at some sites).
1. Great Meteoron Monastery – the largest and oldest.
2. Varlaam Monastery – impressive church and museum.
3. Rousanou Monastery – compact and very photogenic.
4. St. Stephen’s Monastery – easiest access (bridge).
5. Holy Trinity Monastery – dramatic setting on a narrow pillar.
6. St. Nicholas Anapausas Monastery – smaller but full of art.
