Oracle of Delphi Set on the slopes of Mount Parnassus above olive groves, Delphi blends epic scenery with deep myth and politics—city-states consulted the oracle on wars, colonies, and laws. It was the most famous prophetic shrine of ancient Greece—where people from across the Greek world came to seek guidance believed to come from Apollo.
The priestess, called the Pythia, delivered oracles from a chamber within the temple. Visitors made offerings, asked their question, and received often cryptic answers interpreted by priests. Delphi was considered the “navel of the world” (the omphalos), a spiritual center for the Greeks. The Temple of Apollo at Delphi is the heart of the sanctuary.
